New to Windows Mobile

New to Windows Mobile

Hi All,
I have switched from Nokia 5800 running Symbian S60 5th edition to HTC HD2 running Windows Mobile 6.5.
HD2 is a great device and HTC Sense helps a lot, however windows mobile is extremely difficult compared to S60.
I have some questions:
1- Is there a guide for Windows Mobile 6.5 itself and not the HTC Sense? I have read the quick guide at http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/qrg/ but it didn't help. Also the insider section of the windows mobile site doesn't seem to be enough.
I just need a user guide for Windows Mobile 6.5 that is as detailed as the HTC Sense guide.
2- I don't use Outlook to save my contacts but it seems to be the only way to sync. I have synced my Nokia contacts to Outlook 2007 then using Active Sync, I got the contacts and notes to my Windows Mobile. From now on I want to use My Phone as my backup and syncing option however whenever I delete my Windows PC entry from the Active Sync program, all the contacts are gone.
Is there a way to stop using Active Sync and persist my contacts?
3- In S60 you can assign more than one phone with the same label to a contact, i.e. a person has 2 mobiles and I don't want to classify them as work and home because they really aren't, in fact they are 2 numbers in 2 different countries. Also in S60, you can edit the label itself, i.e. mobile (favorite) and mobile (father) and so on.
On the other hand Windows Mobile is has fixed labels and you cannot use the same label twice. Is there a workaround for this?
4- Is there a way to stop automatic 3G data connection? HTC Sense can stop it momentarily but it goes back again. I want to download things via data connection only when I enable it first.
5- Can I create shortcut to profiles so that i switch between them?
6- Why the limit of 3 alarms, can I define more than 3 alarms?

I'd like to be able to access our File Server remotely to download files to be attached to emails. Ideally, we'd like to access them like file explorer, but 3rd party software is fine also.
What is the best way to do this?

P.S I've heard that there MIGHT be a way by adding the device to a domain. I want to try to avoid this if possibly, as it is for a hosted solution.

The push works for as long as a day when I first install (or reinstall), but then stops pushing email and I must sync manually. I've tried all the tricks, like signing out and signing back in, deleting my password and putting it back in, etc. The other day I had a full 24 hours of pushed email, but not much since then.........

I think this is a common problem:

I have only downloaded a few ringtones, wallpaper, and 1 app. I recently tried to open a new word mobile document and I got a message saying " An error occurred. The document could not be opened." I have tried a soft reset and nothing happened. I tried to do a hard reset and I could not enter a password because it will not allow me to press yes. I need help please. Thank you

Linley Meslier has recommended me PHM registry editor.

It was recommended that I download the desktop installer via ActiveSync. However, after I have install the software into my PC. then double click the .exe files to transfer it into my phone program files, nothing happen. the only thing that happen is the add / remove program in activesync pop up. that's it.nothing else happen.

i noticed that the version was from the year 2002. it is due to the version at that time is meant for WM5.0?
Can anyone advise me on this problem? Thanks!

Until recently, I sent/received my Bell Sympatico mail using a POP3 set-up. I could accept meeting appointments which go straight to my Outlook Mobile calendar, and send meeting appointments through SMTP (rather than having to sync with my desktop Outlook). Everything works great, except that POP3 does not support push email........

I could accept meeting appointments which go straight to my Outlook Mobile calendar, and send meeting appointments through SMTP (rather than having to sync with my desktop Outlook). Everything works great, except that POP3 does not support push email.

Therefore, as I found that Sympatico email is registered with Windows Live, I set my Outlook Mobile to receive my email through this service. The push email works fine, but appointments that are sent to me are treated as normal emails and I can't accept as appointments. Furthermore, when I send an appointment using Windows Live as the outgoing server, same thing, the appointment notice loses its properties and is sent as a regular email.

I have tried everything; clearing password and re-registering with Windows Live, hard reset, through every option available both on the phone and on my Windows Live options accessed through the desktop. A problem with Rogers or Bell Sympatico is unlikely because if I go back to my POP3 account, everything works fine. It has to be how Windows Live interacts with Outlook Mobile or how Windows live handles the email data.

My suspicion is that Windows Live is only showing/transmitting a part of the email. When I use the manage folder options in Outlook Mobile, the options are set to "Get headers only" and "include 1 kB of message body". While I can change these options on the screen, the changes won't keep (it keeps returning to "message headers only). This in my mind however doesn't explain why sending message appointments doesn't work also.

Lobster tails on me for anyone who can get my windows live / outlook mobile working as it should.

After having used Palm OS for some years, I finally switched over to Windows Mobile with the purchase of a HP iPAQ hw6965. I was already using Microsoft Outlook on the desktop, so transfering data to the new device was easy. Contacts and Calendar have been working fine for me, however I find the Notes app on Windows Mobile 5.1 to be totally useless.

First of all, when I open the Notes app up I cannot see a significant portion of notes' titles. I see only the first twelve or so characters for each item, which is not nearly enough for me to identify a note of interest. Those twelve characters are followed by the time the note was modified, then followed by a long blank space, then followed by the note's size. I don't care about any of that extraneous information, and the blank space just adds to my frustration since its clearly wasted screen real estate and nothing else. Once I do open a note, whether it be the one I'm looking for or not, then try to close it, I have to wait several seconds for changes to be saved, even though I haven't changed anything... so frustrating! That then means that simply viewing a note on the device may create a conflict when synchronizing since I may have acutally, intentionally modified the note in Outlook.

I have searched the net for an alternative to this useless Notes app, but so far to no avail. I also looked into upgrading to Windows Mobile 6, thinking its Notes app might be better, but HP doesn't offer such an option. So if someone knows of a good alternative app I can use, please post it here

I have been using a Palm Vx since the beginning of time and used MEMOSAFE to encrypt my secret notes. Momosafe was good because it synced with my Outlook notes and I could switch from encrypt to not encrypt by just ticking a box.
I also had WINSAFE on my desktop so I could read the encrypted notes.

I have now got a Windows Mobile 2003se device - can anyone reccomend something like this - theres so much choice !

If it also works on my Palm that would be a plus - as it may be a while before I can force myself to scrap the trusty Palm !

Also it would be good if it could use the Outlook notes to save me having to retype 100's of notes again ? (not that i'm lazy !)

I've inherited a Dell Axim x30 that uses Windows Mobile 2003 second edition. When I've tried to install new things, I'm getting some error messages:
                     " The file (xxxx) is not a valid Windows CE Setup file."
                     "There is no application associated with (xxx). Run the application first, then open this file from within the
                      application." (The file downloaded said it was specifically for Windows Mobile 2003 SE, so I don't
                      understand the problem.)
All of the files are setup files, so in the case of the 2nd error message, I'm not sure what application I need to open in order for it to run. (I'm used to my desktop doing it automatically.)
Is there a way I can work around these messages or am I stuck not being able to download any new features, games, or software?

Hi all, I recently lost an entire afternoon's data in Excel mobile because I thought Excel was saving my data every so often (like the desktop version), but low and behold, it was not. This was all rather frustrating and I would like to avoid the situation in the future. Of course, I realize I can take the time to save my information every few minutes like a responsible adult, but in this day and age, I would expect that Excel mobile would have this feature built into it, especially since it is running on a device that could potentially drop to the ground at a moment's notice. In any case, I would appreciate learning whether anyone in the audience knew: a. whether Excel mobile on a WM5 pocket pc had an autosave feature; and/or b., whether there is a 3rd party program that can solve this issue.

I have recently upgraded from the Samsung Blackjack 1 (WM5) to the Samsung Propel Pro (WM 6.1) and I am experiencing the same shortfall in both phones...........

I have recently upgraded from the Samsung Blackjack 1 (WM5) to the Samsung Propel Pro (WM 6.1) and I am experiencing the same shortfall in both phones.

What the issue for me is is this;
The top alert bar (regardless of the home screen selected) is always the same, it has the '3G' indicator, signal and battery strength, the Bluetooth symbol, the headset indicator, mute, new text message, new email message, and missed call and voicemail icons along the top row of the screen.   Why is it that some of these icons override each other?   The bluetooth symbol is overwritten on the screen if there is a new text message or a new email message. The 'silent' icon is overwritten if there is a headset connected. It seems to me there are enough pixels across to allow for each and every one of those symbols to exist simultaneously across the top row if they're all called for.

The space between the bluetooth/message icon allocated space and the '3G' is more than enough to contain another symbol, and the space between the '3G' and the silent/headset symbol is also wide enough to contain another symbol. Why are those spaces and the space left of the bluetooth/message space completely ignored and unused?

Is there a way to specify a location of those symbols somehow? I've seen plenty of customization threads out there (and even did my own custom color scheme .XML file for the Blackjack a couple years back) but never anything to allow all those symbols to be shown clearly at the same time if needed.

I am very sorry for the broad nature of this question, but I want to develop my first Windows Mobile App and am not entirely sure where to start. I have Visual Studio 2005 Professional.

I have a few major questions, but if there is anything else that anyone thinks I should know, please don't hesitate to tell me.

1) I would like to target PDA's and Smart Phones running Windows Mobile (5.0 I guess?). What project type do I pick? I don't see Windows Mobile as a choice (But I understand that I can do this with VS...).

2) Do I have to do anything special to get this to work on the PDA or Smart Phone?

3) How do I test this type of application? Do I need both a PDA and a Smart Phone?

4) My application will link up with a desktop application that uses a Microsoft Access 2007 database. Can I use a similar database on the handheld, or will I need to use something like XML to store all of my data?

5) How would I transfer data from my desktop application to the handheld application?

6) How do I determine hardware requirements, etc.?

I've got a Smartphone running WM6.1. I'm also running Outlook 2007 on my desktop. I changed my primary default Outlook email address on the desktop, and it worked fine. By simply syncing the Smartphone, the settings were downloaded and I can now send email from the same account via the Smartphone's default Outlook email.

Here's the problem - when I send email through the Smartphone's default Outlook, the display name and reply email address that's listed at the top of the recipient's email is still the old info. So if they click Reply, their message goes to the old email account. If I send email from my new account via Outlook on the desktop, the display name and reply email account are correct.

I can't figure out why this happens, nor how to change it. There are no real account settings to adjust for the default Outlook account on the Smartphone. All those settings come from the desktop and are sync'd to the phone. So since the desktop info is correct, why isn't the Smartphone's info correct? This is frustrating because I can't send or reply to emails from the phone since the recipient will see an incorrect display name, and I wouldn't even get their reply because it'd go to the wrong email account.

Hello, I am using Outlook 2007 and until last month I was using a PDA with Pocket PC 3.0 to sync with it. I recently bought a new PDA/Phone that has Windows Mobile 6.1 and have begun syncing that with my PC, but have found a problem, which I hoped somebody out ther might be able to help me solve.

I subscribe to a number of googlegroup mailing lists and when the emails from these groups arrive in my desktop PC inbox the "From" field in the list of emails correctly displays the author of the email, for example "Fred Bloggs". When I open the email, the "From" line is displayed as follows:

*** Email address is removed for privacy *** on behalf of Fred Bloggs *** Email address is removed for privacy ***]

When I was syncing to my old PDA with Pocket PC 3.0, the inbox on the PDA displayed the authors' names correctly, as in "Fred Bloggs" and when I opened the email on the PDA it correctly displayed at the top of the email that it was from "Fred Bloggs".

However, when I now sync to my new PDA with Windows Mobile 6.1, all of the emails are listed in the inbox to be from *** Email address is removed for privacy *** . All of the "On behalf of" reference has been truncated. The same applies when I actually open the email on the new PDA. The result of this is that it is impossible to tell who the contributor is to the discussion that is taking place.
I am actually able to log in to my internet service provider (Freenet) directly from my phone if I choose to receive my emails in that way. If I do that then the emails arrive in a separate "Freenet" inbox on my phone. In this case, any emails that I receive from googlegroups are listed with the senders name correctly displayed and when I open the email the name of the sender is correctly displayed at the top of the mail. This Freenet inbox was set up when I set up the POP SMTP mail account on my phone.

However, if I receive the emails on to my desktop PC, where I use outlook 2007, and then use activesync to get the emails on to my phone/pda, the emails synchronize in to the original "outlook e-mail" inbox that is part of windows mobile 6.1. As described earler,in this scenario, any emails from googlegroups are displayed in the inbox as being from "googlegroups" without the vital originator's name. Similarly, if I open one of the emails, I can only see that it came from googlegroups, but cannot see the originator's name.

Is this a problem that has been highlighted previously? Is there a setting in windows mobile 6.1 to change the way that it handles this "on behalf of" emails. Any help would be appreciated in trying to get Windows Mobile 6.1 to be as user friendly as Pocket PC3.0 !!!

2. From the device itself using "wceload.exe" which runs on target device and take a .cab file as parameter.

in my case, I can not use option one as I need to download the required component directly (Over the Air) to the target device.

Quires:

1. Is there any way to create a CAB file on the fly on target device if I want to use "wceload.exe" and CAB file is not provided.

2. Any other option (Using some APIs e.g. creating custom installation APIs, Configuration Manager related APIs etc) without using wceload.exe and CAB file.

So I searched for alternative apps. Every last one of them utilizes the same data store as outlook, and so won't synch or offer any way to edit this data on my desktop.

It looks like the only possible alternative is google synch. Am I correct?

So i can connect to my computer through remote desktop mobile if i hook up to my wifi. can i do it over my cell internet, like when ever im not by a wifi connection? every time i try it says cannot connect. likely reasons are: 1 remote computer is not set up for this. 2 reached maximum number of connections 3 network error occurred while connecting. an i am using my local ip from http://checkmyip.com/ not the 192.168.x.x one. please help I would like to connect whenever i am at work.

Can anyone tell me if Microsoft's Text to Speech download will work on my windows mobile phone? It is a Samsung Omnia ll touch screen. I have downloaded Microsoft's Reader to the phone and one book but I do not have sound. I would think that I should have sound because I also have the Reader on my laptop and it has sound. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium with service pack 2 on the laptop. I have not downloaded the text to speech because I am afraid it will not work and I might possibly have trouble uninstalling it. PLEASE HELP ANYONE!!!!

I have a Sprint Treo 700wx running Windows Mobile 5.0. It has the Windows Office application on it that included Word, Excel and Powerpoint. I also have the ability to set up my different email accounts but this phone does not have the seperate Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile. My brother-in-law just got a Treo 700wx through Verizon and his has a seperate Outlook application.

Two questions: What is the difference between what I have and what he has and is it worth getting the seperate Outlook app for my phone (or can I even get it and if so where)?

I just got a Samsung Smartphone w/ Win Moble 6 and, from what I've been reading, the scattered Outlook Mobile. I am extremely knowledgable about Windows Operation Systems, however I cannot seem to understand what they are trying to do here. On the 'Outlook Email Setup' screen I'm asked to "select your email provider from the list." However, the dropdown list in only populated with, "Other (POP/IMAP)." I'm advised if I do not see my email provider to select, "Other (POP/IMAP)." To cut this short, I go on the enter my email address and password. The next part is where I'm scratching my head. I'm asked to select: Account Type: (my only options) POP3, IMAP4, MMS --What the ****...where's the HTTP Protocl like on PC Outlook. I'm been searching the forum for some answers and I have to say that I'm very suprised this issue has not been brought up more frequently. Can anyone advise, please. THANKS!

I downloaded the file and proceeded to execute it.

After accepting the EULA I get a message saying that A newer version of Microsoft Office Mobile is installed on your computer or Windows Mobile powered device.

I know I have 6.0 installed and this is the first time I have every connected this phone to my vista machine. Someone please help.

I use Live Messenger 2009 from my PC all day - but I also frequently use it from my Windows Mobile phone when I step away from my desk. Unfortunately I have never been able to log on to Messenger from my PC and my mobile phone at the same time - one logs the other one off, which is very annoying....

I've used the latest Windows Live Mobile service and the IM app that came with my phone (HTC Touch on Sprint PCS) but neither allow me to log on simultaneously with my PC. I've also tried several 3rd party apps like Nimbuzz and Fring, but they too log me off of Messenger on my PC when they start up on my phone. The settings on my Messenger are set to allow "Sign in at more than one place", but that does not seem to apply when it comes to Windows Mobile Messenger. Is there anyway I can make this work, or are there any recommendations for 3rd party apps that will allow me to sign in (and stay signed in) to Live Messenger on both my PC and Windows Mobile phone simultaneously?

EDIT - I'll add... Is it possible to do this with Exchange Activesync as well? It seems like some third-party apps give this ability but if you look at the below link, it seems like it can be done inheriently.
